Knee Injuries & Chiropractic Care

5 common Knee Injuries:

1. Muscle Tendon Injury

Muscles are connected to bones via a tendon. The quadriceps muscle tendons and patella tendon can become strained. This puts pressure on the patella (knee cap) causing it to move incorrectly when walking/running. This incorrect movement can be due to misalignment of the knee joint causing twisting in the tendons.

Example: Runner’s knee

2. Knee Ligament injury

The knee has 4 main ligaments that attach bone to bone i.e. the Femur to the Tibia. Twisting, hyper-extension of the knee, hyper-bending of the knee or even an impact injury can cause the ligaments to weaken and tear.

When ligaments are constantly re-injured it becomes harder for them to heal and recover hence, leading to complete tears which could, unfortunately, lead to expensive surgery. Always make sure to have regular Chiropractic care in order for faster healing to occur.

3. Knee Cartilage injury

Cartilage in the knee acts like a cushion between bones. This cartilage can start to wear away after recurring injuries leading to arthritis in the knee, which is bone decay at the knee joint. This can be a ‘grinding’ type of feeling at the knee.

Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pain and strengthen arthritic knee joints.

4. Muscle and Fascial injury

This is injury to the muscles around the knee e.g. Hamstrings, Quadriceps, groin/adductor muscles, Iliotibial ITB band and Tensor Fascia Latae TFL.

Injury to the big muscles groups can often occur due to misalignment of the pelvic, hip and lower back bones, even from poor posture. Chiropractic care ensures that strain is taken off the muscles by making sure the bones are aligned, hence, less injuries occur.

5. Inflammation of the Knee Bursae

This can occur in people who have jobs requiring them to kneel down constantly e.g. mechanics and gardeners.

There is a fluid pad know as a bursa covering the knee cap, this can become irritated and inflamed, it will hurt to bend and straighten the knee.

Remember that everything in the body functions together like a big continuous band. You could, for example, have a hip joint weakness which can eventually lead to knee problems and then even ankle issues. It could also start from bad posture causing your pelvis and spine to be misaligned.

Chiropractors are trained to look at the whole picture, not just the area of complaint. We want to make sure you are constantly moving and feeling your best. Make sure to get regular Chiropractic care in order to avoid injuries or further injury to your knees.

Healthier Children with Chiropractic!

“Chiropractic Care for my Child? Why?”

Many parents appreciate the importance of regular checkups for their children’s teeth, hearing and vision but draw a blank when it comes to a spinal-structural check-up. Such a check-up could be one of the most important your children will ever have!

The spine protects billions of nerves that send messages and energy to every part of their bodies.
If there is a blockage of any of the nerves in the body then a state of “dis-ease” can develop. This can lead to lowered immunity to disease, sickness and infections. It can also cause weaknesses in body movements and poor posture.

Children are constantly active, falling down, injuring themselves, especially during toddlerhood. Some falls may be minor and in some cases they may be unknowingly damaging to a child’s nervous system and spinal alignment.

At Live Well Chiropractic we love to see the whole family, from babies to grandparents. Many Chiropractic families report having more energy, improved health, less dependency on drugs and medication. It is not unusual to hear parents state that since starting chiropractic care their children get sick less frequently, less severely, reduced bed wetting, better digestion, increase in focus, have less ear infections and take less antibiotics than their classmates.

Warning signs indicating that the spinal column may be out of alignment:

  • Fatigue
  • Hyperactivity
  • Frequent falling/unbalanced
  • Shoulder blades flare out
  • One hip or shoulder higher than the other
  • Neck tilt
  • Joint aches
  • One leg looks shorter
  • One arm looks shorter
  • A foot turned out
  • Bed-wetting
  • Irritability
  • Poor Posture
